AMORGOS
My favourite of all the islands we visited, Amorgos has a
laidback charm and plenty to do for a week’s stay.
We took a walking tour which included a visit to
the Botanical Park, a small garden 昀椀lled with herbs
and indigenous plants. Our meander through the
narrow streets ended with a taste of the local
tipple, psimeni raki. Made with honey and cloves, this
sweet, strong liqueur was historically brewed by monks
to greet weary pilgrims.
Like all of these quiet islands, there are hiking trails for
various levels of 昀椀tness. After a short walk uphill, we
delved down the other side to 昀椀nd a hidden beach, only
accessible via the rocky paths or by small boat.
IRAKLIA
You’ll 昀椀nd few tourists on Iraklia other than hikers and
runners that enjoy its hilly terrain, and those stopping off
by boat at the harbour.
Stunning sandy beaches make it only too easy to spend
days lounging by the sea, with the occasional dip.
Docking here late in the afternoon, after our daily swim
stop, we relaxed on the golden shores before hitting the
town, or village, of Agios Georgios (Saint George).
The whitewashed streets and blue dome churches are
enchanting, and with just over 100 permanent residents,
there’s a true sense of island life.
