Most of these small islands have a chora, or town, built up
high atop a hill, and Serifos is no different.
While most of our fellow cruise-goers took the organised
tour bus up to the top, we decided to walk. I soon began to
question that decision but ultimately I was glad we did.
Paths up to the chora are easy to follow, although near the
top, the winding white stairs around houses feel a bit hairy
for anyone, like me, who’s afraid of heights.
But the town square at the summit is a charming little haven
where tavernas serve ice cold lemonade and cakes, and the
views are second to none. A 昀椀tting place to complete our
captivating voyage.

With over 200 inhabited Greek islands to choose from,
there’s vast scope for discovery beyond the big names.
While there are airports on some of the islands, for many
you need to go by boat.
To create your own island-hopping itinerary, explore the
Greek 昀氀eet of passenger boats, ferries and hyrdrofoils.
All Greek islands are linked to the mainland, along with
good connections between them.
If, like Samantha, you want a more relaxing tour, opt for
a cruise and discover hidden beaches and coves only
accessible by boat.
The Mediterranean climate means summers are hot
and dry. Expect temperatures of over 30C in July and
August, cooled by seasonal winds called the meltemi
that sweep across the Aegean sea.
Shoulder season breaks also offer warm sunshine, with
temperatures often around 25C, with fewer crowds and
a more relaxed pace.
