Freshly cooked sardines are well worth travelling
to taste – the aroma as they grill over charcoal
is something else, particularly on warm summer
evenings. A Portuguese delicacy, 2,500kg of sardines
were consumed at last year’s festival, which attracted
over 120,000 visitors. In addition to live music and craft
stalls, expect historical reenactments of 昀椀sherfolk
landing sardine catches.

from across the UK. There are buses from the airport
to Portimão or trains from Faro station.

With a history dating back 80 years, this annual ticketonly festival features an hour-long tomato battle
beginning around midday. Over 120,000kg of overripe, squashed tomatoes are thrown by thousands of

strudel festival. Pastry fans will delight in a deep dive
into strudel-making at this free event, which typically
features over 60 types of sweet and savoury pastries.
Getting there: Fly to Valencia (Manises airport) with a
choice of airlines, including budget options. Transfer
by taxi or bus to Bunol.
Visitors can taste different varieties and learn more
about the history of strudel while wandering through
the charming town as traditional live music plays in the
background.
